As my vacation from work ends and I prepare to go back to Brooklyn and start my normal working life again there have been a few things on my mind.

First, how happy my ankles have been. I don’t want to jinx myself, but since I’ve been out at my parents’ house the swelling has been minimal at worst.

I think this is due to a few things. First, I don’t really do any walking while I’m here besides my workouts and to and from my car. Second, I have so much time to devote to my ankle. I can take time to heat it and stretch in the morning and then ice it when I get back from my workout. Then I can do the foam roller and soak it in an epsom salt bath in the evening. And finally I can heat it, stretch it, and ice it again at night.

When I’m living my normal life I just don’t have time for this. I think one of my biggest struggles in training for the half marathon (and being healthy in general) is going to be making time to take care of my ankles.

Hopefully the work I’ve done this week will be good groundwork for being looser and healthier going forward.

The second thing on my mind has been my schedule. As you know I have my half marathon training plan and it means running 3 days per week, including one Saturday. The Saturday I’m not worried about, it’s during the week that stresses me.

After I get over 3 miles working out at the gym during peak hours becomes difficult. They’re pretty strict about 30 minutes on cardio machines during peak times and now that it’s right after New Year’s I feel like it’s always going to be a peak time.

At first I was thinking that I don’t want to wait to work out later at night since I like heading to bed early, which only left the morning.

My schedule now is:

5:30 wake up, stretch, workout at home
6:15ish finish working out, stretch, read blogs
6:45 shower
7:00 get dressed
7:10 make and eat breakfast while reading blogs
7:45 put on make up, get my stuff together
8:00 leave for work

But the more I thought about it the more I realized that maybe working out at night is the way to go. Here’s how I see my schedule if I work out at night:

5:30 wake up, heat ankle, stretch, do yoga, foam roller, and/or epsom bath soak
6:45 shower (this isn’t negotiable, since I live with roommates 6:45 is my appointed shower time)
7:00 get dressed
7:10 make and eat breakfast while reading blogs
7:45 put on make up, get my stuff together
8:00 leave for work

Then that brings us to the evening:

6:00 arrive home from work, heat ankle, stretch
6:30 leave for workout
7:30 arrive home from workout, stretch, cook dinner
8:00 eat dinner while icing ankles
9:30 heat ankles, stretch, ice ankles
10:00 bed

I think working out at night will be a more realistic goal. And working out after work is a great stress reliever for me.

Sorry if this is a boring post, I’m just trying to work this all out in my head. Obviously I have to see how all of this goes when I’m actually back in the city. I’m just letting my type-A personality show!

Wondering what I’m doing with all my days off from work? Yeah, me too. But productive things have been accomplished!

I have been wanting to try a Green Monster for a while, but I’ve been afraid. I don’t really like spinach and I have major texture issues with food. But, I decided that today was the day to conquer that fear.

How’d it go?

(I would like it noted that the lighting didn’t look this bad on my camera or I would have taken another picture!)

Really well!! I thought it was delicious!

My green monster had:

  • 1 tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1 c. cooked spinach
  • 1 c. unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 c. frozen blueberries
  • 3 ice cubes

It was the only thing I ate until around 3pm and I wasn’t even starving at 3. I think there are going to be a lot of Green Monsters in my future!

Another thing I decided to try was the foam roller. My glutes, hams, and quads have been super tight lately and something needed to be done.

I bought the foam roller on Monday and I’ve done the exercises from this site (although I am not at all coordinated enough to do the arm ones) and although it’s quite painful when I’m doing them I do think it’s helpful.

My legs have been a lot less sore than they were before and my tendon hasn’t been swelling as much.


What else have I been up to?

  • I’ve watched lots and lots of tennis
  • I’ve eaten way too many sweets
  • I have a nasty cold which I think might be a sinus infection
  • I’ve been running twice, did No More Trouble Zones once, and Bikini Ready Fast once
  • I bought running pants from Lululemon and winter running shirts from Under Armour and Nike (pants and Nike shirt seen above)
  • I got locked out of my house since no one in my family realized I didn’t have a key (even though I tell them this all the time)
  • And I’ve been trying in vain to get answers about my potentially very large PT bill

Anyone else off from work? Up to anything fun?

There have been a few things I keep forgetting to post about in other posts so I thought I’d assemble them all together here.

First, the night splint I got from the orthopedist is an amazing miracle. Since I started sleeping in it I’ve had virtually no ankle pain! My ankle has still be swelling, but not nearly as much as it had been. I love the night splint.


And bonus, I don’t even notice it while I’m sleeping! Take that PA who told me it would be so uncomfortable and I would hate it.

Second, I bought really fun Christmas nail polish that I’m really enjoying wearing. OPI by Sephora And a Cherry On Top, if you’re interested.

(It looked better about a week ago.)

Third, I tried this amazing frozen yogurt place at the mall the other day. It’s called 16 Handles (funny, right?). It’s self-serve and you pick from an extensive selection of frozen yogurts (I got the cheesecake) and then put your own toppings on (I got brownie, chocolate chips, and white chocolate sauce). The best part is that you give yourself however much you want so, since I had just eaten dinner, I didn’t have much. And then you weigh it and it’s charged based on weight. Loved it.

Fourth, and this is maybe TMI, but I have super, super dry skin on my hands and wrists and I don’t know what to do. I’ve never had this before! I exfloliate, I moisturize, I dry my hands after washing them, I wear gloves when I’m outside! And still they’re gross. It looks like I have a rash. Plus it’s painful and itchy.

Fifth, I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, but I get off from work for the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Not because I took vacation time, but because my company shuts down! It’s one of the best parts about working in publishing. Technically we’re open on Christmas Eve but I took off since that’s the only day my family is celebrating. So after December 23, 2009 my next day back in the office is January 4, 2010!!

Sixth, I really, really love my new haircut!

Christmas Cookies #1

Sorrythat I’ve been away again. What have I been up to?

Wednesday I had another PT appointment. This one was more productive. She really massaged my ankles and used the sonogram on them. And then she wrapped my right ankle which felt great. The extra support made a big different, I wish I could have it wrapped all the time!

Thursday I took a field trip for work to visit a bunch of stores on Long Island. Did you know that Spencer’s gifts sell sex toys? In the middle of malls. I’m hardly prude, but I was a little shocked!

Friday night my friend Josy came over and we got wine, burgers from Five Guys, and made Christmas cookies. I don’t have pictures, but I’m going to make more of that recipe since I have extra ingredients so I’ll post about it then.

Today I slept in late, I woke up around 11. My friend didn’t leave until 12:30 last night and I was seriously in need to sleep any way. It felt good, but lazy.

I finally managed to get myself out of my apartment, into the freezing cold, around 2 and I headed to the gym. I did 50 very productive minutes on the elliptical and then ran some errands.

I decided I’m going to start saving change and then deposit it once a month or so into savings. I thought that would be an easy way to save money.

I have this piggy bank I painted my senior year of college (don’t know why) and it already had some change in it. It’s a little freaked because the eyes seem to have fallen off.

I need to get out the Sharpie.

So as of now I have just over $10 of change in there. We’ll see how much I manage to save the rest of the month.

On to the cookies! I had a real desire to bake cookies this weekend so I’m making three different kinds. Today I made Peanut Butter Cup Cookies and they are delicious!

For me the key to really great cookies is beating the sugar and butter together for a long time. Unfortunately I don’t have a standing mixer so I have to use the hand mixer. It’s a good arm workout though!

I love this fancy Nielsen-Massey vanilla from Williams-Sonoma, it makes everything taste better.

Here’s the dough all combined. It’s nice and light and fluffy since I beat the butter and sugar together for so long.

The cookies were supposed to be baked in mini muffin tins but I didn’t have one of those so I made them on a regular cookie sheet.

I used TJ’s peanut butter cups for the centers of the cookies.

I also discovered that I hate Jif. I guess I’ve just completely lost my taste for overly sweet, processed peanut butter? If that’s the case, yay!

My plans for yesterday evening were majorly destroyed.

I didn’t finish a frustrating physical therapy session until after 8pm (I started at 6:30!) so I realized I wouldn’t have time to go to Trader Joe’s and make it to Union Market for my cheese before they closed at 9pm.

I made an executive decision that I wanted cheese more than I wanted the things from TJ’s so I got on the subway that goes closer to my apartment and to Union Market. Well, the subway got stuck underground for about 10 minutes so when we stopped at the first stop in Brooklyn, which is relatively close to TJ’s, it was 8:40 and there was no way I was making it to two more stops and the 10 minute walk to the market before 9pm.

I got off figuring I’d cut my losses and just go to Trader Joe’s where I can buy cheese. But the subway where I get off is much farther from TJ’s than I thought so it took a while to get there.

Keep in mind that I’m starving this entire time. I had an apple around 5 which I thought be enough to hold me over, but I also though I’d be home around 8!

Basically I didn’t end up getting home until after 9:30 and at that point I wasn’t going to roast brussel sprouts. So my dinner was changed to

Take out the planned veggie and add an apple, two pieces of TJ’s cheddar (not bad), and two pieces of chocolate.

I did ok with the spending. I ended up spending $17.24 in Trader Joe’s which is more than I wanted, but I got the $3.29 cheese, a $2.99 chocolate orange

and a 99 cent Advent Calendar for my office

We’ve decorated our office for Christmas and we’ve been playing Christmas music nonstop. I’m add this today

I’ll try to remember to take a picture of our other stuff today.

Another result of geting home so late last night was that I didn’t have time to make oatmeal for this morning so I had to have cold cereal.

Congrats, we’ve all made it through to Friday!!! Woooooo!!!

Somehow, even though I was off all last week, it feels like I’ve just been dragging by at work. But this was my last full week in the office with nothing going on. Next week I have a bunch of meetings, my boss is out of the office one day, and I’m out of the office another so it should fly by. And the week after that is a bunch of meetings and our office holiday party.

Can I tell you about our office holiday party?? We’ve always had it in our office, but this year, since we’re doing quite well, we’re having it out of the office at a place called Danny Meyer’s Kitchen at the Hudson Yards.

Danny Meyer is a, I’m going to call him, culinary god, known for Union Square Cafe, Blue Smoke, Gramercy Tavern, and Shake Shack (the only one I can afford). Plus more.

I am way, way, way too excited for the food.

Anyway, back to heath and fitness.

PHYSICAL THERAPY kind of blows. I don’t think I have any chemistry with the physical therapist, which is fine, but I just don’t understand what we’re doing. Like Wednesday, we stretched a lot. She asked if I was sore. No, I was not sore, as I’ve explained many times to her it’s not painful, it’s just swollen. She told me to go do squats. Still not sore.

I go home and do the other stetches she gave me. And, to her credit, the stretching does reduce the swelling, but then I go and live my life (minus the running) and it swells.

It seems to me that I should be running (yeah, yeah, I know, I’m biased) and she should be watching me run and seeing what happens. I’m going to discuss this when I’m back there on Monday.

Otherwise my week has been good. I’ve been at up 5:30 every morning to hang out with Jillian or my Bikini Ready Fast friend Ellen. I did the elliptical (bah!) for 50 minutes at the gym Wednesday night going from a level 12 to a level 16 at different times and Thursday night for 30 minutes the majority of it on a level 16. I’ve discovered if I do it on a level 16 at a 9.0 pace my heart rate finally gets up into the 180s.

PT

I went to my first physical therapy session yesterday. Normally I’m a pretty chatty, friendly person to doctors, nurses, etc., but for some reason I just wasn’t feeling it yesterday and I don’t think that helped.

Overall I’d say my calves got a great stretch. She kept poking and pulling and making me do toe raises and asking me to tell her when it hurt. But it doesn’t hurt, it’s actually never really hurt, it just swells and then my ankles feel strange and bloated.

But the workout was pretty intensive. I got a massage, then heated, then pulled my feet back with a strap, spelled the alphabet with my ankles, stretched on a block thing, did the bike for 10 minutes, and then got iced. She also gave me some exercises to do at home.

I go back tomorrow so we’ll see. She said no running for now, but eventually I can start running there and she might try taping my ankles.

THANKSGIVING RESOLUTIONS

So far so good. I woke up at 5:30 yesterday morning and did the first four workouts from Jillian Michael’s No More Trouble Zones.

It felt great. I love waking up early, I just feel so much more relaxed and accomplished. I just need to work on remembering that when I go to bed late or have an exhausting day.

Today I again woke up at 5:30 and I did the Bikini Ready Fast DVD.

Again, I feel great. If I start being lazy I need to come back and read this.

My finances are moving along nicely as well. In a lovely bit of serendipity Catilin at Healthy Tipping Point instituted her own Responsible Spending Challenge and she linked to Mint.com.

After doing some research I decided that Mint.com is perfect for me. I’ve already uploaded all of my information and set budgets. So far the only issue I have is that I like spending cash, I think it helps me keep track of what I have better since it’s “real” money not just a number in my bank account. So I have to find a way around that.

After puting in all of my income and my budgets I have over $400 left at the end of the month! Obviously there are things are forgetting because I don’t remember the last time I had $400 extra dollars! But I have $100 for entertainment, $60 for laundry, $50 for beauty products and I think all of those are high.

We shall see. Hopefully this will help me pay off my credit card and help me save for a really cool vacation (Spain? Argentina? Here I come!).

Bad things about the Thanksgiving Resolution? I forgot to sort my emails before I left the office last night. But I can do that first thing this morning.

I think December is going to be a good month!
