Monday Happies

1. Goats in jackets. I don’t know why this picture makes me so happy, but it really, really, really does. I’ve looked at it a bunch of times since I took it on Saturday and every time it just makes me smile and gives me a happy feeling. I wish it was a better picture so I could frame it. I even made it the background of my work computer.

2. Generosity. I mentioned that I had a lovely dinner at my friend/colleague Erica’s parents’ house on Friday night. And her parents are just so kind. Her mother left Halloween candy on my bed, was so attentive to me at dinner, and offered me Challah bread to take home. Plus she left us a lovely spread for breakfast on Saturday morning. Additionally, my roommate Grace graciously (see what I did there?) let me use a leftover bottle of red wine from her birthday party in my chili recipe and she gave me one of her bananas on Sunday morning so I didn’t have to run out and buy one. Kindness, it goes a long way.

3. Fall. I am bad for recycling more Sheep and Wool pictures? Whatever. Although fall keeps teasing us with its appearance here in NYC, I totally love it. The changing leaves, the wearing tights with dresses, the apples, and the pumpkin beer. And I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting…

Monday Happies

1. Good movie. I mentioned yesterday that my roommate and I went to see Argo Saturday night. I don’t go to the movies all that often, they’re expensive and in NYC they’re always so crowded it takes some of the fun out of it. But I’m so happy I agreed to see Argo. A good movie is like a good book, in my mind. It totally transports you somewhere else and makes you sad when it’s over.

2. Believing in myself. I don’t think I suffer from low self-esteem, but, I think, like anyone, I can sometimes sell myself short. This year has really taught me that if I believe I can do something then I can do it. There are times when I think it’s better to beat expectations than to fall short of expectations, but I’m still working on believing in myself as much as possible.

3. New Fall TV. I love the fall for so many reasons (cooler temperatures, pumpkin beer…) but I especially love checking out all the new TV shows that debut. I’m giving glowing endorsements to Call the Midwife and Last Resort, mixed reviews to Revolution, Go On, and The New Normal, a I-don’t-understand-what-everyone-likes-about-this-show look to The Mindy Project (why must she be so dumb?!?!), and the jury’s-still-out on Nashville, I love Connie Britton and I love country music, but there were a lot of storylines in the pilot and I really didn’t enjoy all the stuff with her father and her loser husband.

Monday Happies

1. Boots! I am so excited that it’s boot weather. I saw people wearing them on a couple of cooler September days, but I held out until it go really cold. And thankfully today was that day!

2. Flowers. As I mentioned my parents came to visit this past weekend and they bought me some gorgeous flowers (that I picked out) from the Greenmarket. I don’t know what these are, because I’m terrible at flowers, but I think they’re completely lovely.

3. October. September kind of totally blew, but so far I am loving October. I don’t want to jinx it, but let’s hope this good fortune (or just lack of bad fortune) continues.

Monday Happies

If you’re stopping by because you saw that I’m this week’s Fitblog host and want to learn more about me make sure to check on Sunday’s post.

Some of the best French toast I've ever had. #brunch

1. Brunch. I rarely leave brunch satisfied. It’s just not my favorite meal. Brunch doesn’t normally happen until 11am or later and if I’m up at 8am, I need to eat something before that, ie. breakfast. So then I’m left with lunch and there aren’t always great lunch options on brunch menus. But on Saturday my roommate Grace and I went to Buttermilk Channel for brunch (where I’ve been before) and rather than having something savory, I went for the pecan pie French toast. AND IT WAS AMAZING. Seriously one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Give me that any day and I will love brunch.

2. Homeland. I’ve written about my love of TV before, BUT OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, HOMELAND IS AMAZING. If you’re not watching this show start right now. Literally, download it, watch it on demand, buy the DVDS IMMEDIATELY. The way the new season started out last night was fantastic and I have no doubt the second season will be just as phenomenal as the first.

3. My roommates. We celebrated Grace’s birthday last weekend and Abby’s birthday this weekend and they (and their friends) are just fun to be around at home and out and about. Plus they’ve been incredibly supportive through all my family drama over the last month. I have really lucked out with the roommate draw in my life.

And a very happy birthday to my grandma today!

Monday Happies

1. The Vendy Awards. I know I did a whole post about them yesterday, but I’m putting it here again. It’s seriously one of my favorite NYC events (US Open and the Marathon probably round out my top three). If you get a chance to go to the one here, or the ones that have sprung up in other cities, do it!

2. Bringing my lunch to work. I made this one of my goals for the fall and I am so happy to say I’m sticking to it and it hasn’t even been that hard! I think after a summer of mostly going out all the time I was ready to go to work every day with a plan. Eating out is fun, but when you do it all the time it starts to lose its luster. There are only so many times you can go to Hale & Hearty/Chop’t/Potbelly/Chipotle/etc. Plus I’m saving money, woooo!

Free Thai lunch. Yumm.

3. Surprise lunches with friends. At about 12:15 Friday afternoon my former officemate Amy called to say she had just gotten out of a meeting in the neighborhood and asked if I was available for lunch. Even though I had brought my lunch (see #2) I met up with her for a cheap and highly enjoyable Thai meal. It was the perfect Friday activity.

Monday Happies

1. Reading. I obviously really love reading. But I’ve been on a real tear lately. In the last week I’ve read five books. That’s with working, working out, cooking, watching tennis, socializing, sleeping, etc. I am a very fast reader but that’s pretty crazy even for me. There is really nothing better than getting lost in a good book.

2. Football. I grew up watching a fair number of NFL games with my father. In fact, for one season he had me and my brother pick teams and recorded our picks in a notebook. We were actually pretty good. For years, beyond the Super Bowl I paid very little attention to football. Then I graduated college, made friends in NYC who are rabid fans of teams from back home and got into watching the NFL with them. And in the past few years I’ve come to really like college football. I love the atmosphere and culture around it, and I love how absolutely passionate the fans are. It kind of reminds me of soccer in Europe. This fall I am loving watching college football Saturday and the NFL on Sunday.

3. iPhones. This is a weird one. I’ve had my iPhone for a while now, but over the summer my mother got in iPhone. And then, this weekend, my dad got one. My parents have never been technologically inclined. For years they’ve both had flip phones that they don’t even leave on. They just carried them with them (maybe) and turned them off if they needed something. But now I can text with my parents, send them pictures, plays games with them and I think that’s pretty great.

Monday Happies

Come on Tsonga!

1. Tennis. I had a few great days at the US Open last week. I wish I had more, but it just wasn’t to be this year. That’s life, right? One of my friends and I were talking and she said her “happy place” in NYC is the Grandstand court at the US Open. Honestly, I think my happy place is the entire complex where the US Open is held. I get this feeling there that I can’t quite explain. It’s filled with people, but still peaceful. It’s completely different than when I went as a child, but still so nostalgic. These two weeks are some of my favorite of the entire year.

2. Celeste and Jesse Forever. I had never heard of this movie before my roommate invited me to go see it with her yesterday. And I loved it! I thought it was cute and just hipster enough to be current without being totally over the top. Plus, it taught me a very valuable lesson (I’m a little too much like Celeste) that it’s better to be happy than right. There’s a scene where she yells at a guy for cutting in line at a coffee shop which is totally something I would do because it annoys me when people break rules and I need to be right. (Lovely personality trait, right?)

3. Quiet time. I unexpectedly stayed in NYC this weekend. I was really upset about it at first, I always spend Labor Day at my parents’ and I am not good at change, but it actually ended up being nice. I got a lot of things done, I watched a lot of tennis, I slept a lot, and I read a few books. Plus I had dinner with friends who just got back from their honeymoon and I spent some bonding time with my roommate Abby. Not a bad weekend in the end.
