Vendy Awards 2011

I can’t believe that this is my fourth year at the Vendy’s (see 2009 and 2010 posts). Like last year, this year’s event was held on Governor’s Island. Also like last year my friend Elisa was supposed to come, but then couldn’t. Luckily my old roommate Amy stepped in and came with me.

Chimichury El Malecon. I was so excited to try them, but they were not good. And we waited forever. They seemed to have no system down and were completely unprepared. They ran out of food pretty quickly.

Untitled

Sam’s Falafel, I really love falafel.

Untitled

Taim Mobile. Again, falafel. Not bad.

Untitled

La New Yorkina. Really delicious ice pops, see their menu:

I had the pineapple jalapeño. It was delicious.

Untitled

The Souvlaki GR truck. I’ve eaten from this truck many times but I really wanted Amy to try their french fries.

Untitled

Since the Souvlaki line was so long Amy went and grabbed us pizza from Eddie’s Pizza Truck. I thought the pizza was good, probably would be better hot. The sweet potato gnocchi was really great, a total dessert.

Untitled

Finally we got our sovlaki, I thought I ordered chicken, but given the color I hope this was pork.

Untitled

And the famous fries. They have oregano and feta on them and are so good.

Untitled

Wooley’s was my biggest surprise. They serve Taiwanese and Hawaiian shaved ice which was amazing. Seriously, probably the best thing I ate all day, maybe the best thing I’ve ever had at a Vendy Awards. And they won for best dessert!

Untitled

The Cinnamon Snail was at last year’s Awards, too. I’ve never tried their food, the people who work there wear these weird costumes and they freak me out.

Untitled

However I liked the outfit the guy at Miss Softee was wearing.

Untitled

And the ice cream was pretty good, too.

Untitled

Korilla Barbeque truck. I was really excited to try this one too. The line was long, but totally worth it. The good thing about the lines are that they allow you to digest your food.

Untitled

My chicken taco was very good, fatty, but good.

Untitled

Tamales Guadalupe. These were really damn good. I love a good tamale.

Untitled

We left the Vendy Awards to go to the bathroom in the nice air conditioned bathroom (rather than the porta potties) and there was this cool art installation.

Untitled

I liked the poem that went along with the art.

Untitled

La Bella Torte. These traditional Italian desserts were really good. But, and this is judgmental, the owners were really overweight and clearly diabetic and on dialysis, and that kind of ruined it for me.

Untitled

The Korilla guys were really funny, they were getting wasted. They won for rookie of the year.

Another good year at the Vendy’s. This is probably the first year I didn’t leave totally stuffed, which was nice, but kind of disappointing. I ate dinner when I got home!

New York From the Air

The publishing company where I work has a new book coming out called New York From the Air. To celebrate the books’s release there was a party at 7 World Trade Center, one of the new buildings in the World Financial Center.

The party was on the 49th floor, in an unfinished space, and the views were absolutely amazing.

Untitled

The elevator was so cool (I sound like a hick…) but you put the floor number you wanted to go to in a keypad in the lobby and then the elevator just automatically went there!

Untitled

Looking over to Brooklyn. I could see Prospect Park.

Lower Manhattan.

This was a “sunset over Manhattan” it was delicious. As was all the food they had. Especially the potato chips.

This is the Freedom Tower and the reflection is the building we were in.

The WTC memorial. I’ll never go see them, but it was nice to be able to have some first-person idea of what they’re like.

This was a building west of where we were. It’s an office building and all night we thought it was so strange how every single light was on. We didn’t see any people.

It was a really nice night. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a building that high and it was amazing to see New York City from that level.
